Theatre on the move

The project is funded by zukunft.niedersachsen/the European programme of the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture and the Volkswagen Foundation as a seed project for European research. It focuses on travel literature as an understudied material in theatre historiography. Therefore, the analysis of European travelogues and reports on journeys to Europe from the perspective of theatre studies and in particular theatre historiography is at the centre of the research project. This represents a particular challenge insofar as there is currently no archive, register nor database that specifically classifies travelogues according to theatre-relevant or theatre scholarly categories. In its transnational approach and in the investigation of travelogues in their various manifestations, the research project aims to contribute to the inclusion of marginalised or even absent positions, persons and events such as female theatre historiography, colonial theatricality and intersectional perspectives on theatre and cultural history.
